So I just bumped my target buck for 2017? We have a month and 8 days until the season starts. This is a disaster scenario right? Not quite. Believe it or not there's many different types of scared deer. This particular buck was in a bed and heard me coming and to my advantage he never got a good look at what I was before he shot out of sight like a bullet.
Scaring a deer is never good but this buck has always been a homer and hasn't reacted poorly to being scared the previous two times last fall. This could change but I like my odds of this deer sticking around. When you're in this situation like I am, there's different ways you can do it. The first and what I've noticed is the most popular choice is that you can be a total ass and run back in there and set up a few cameras and check them frequently to confirm he's still around, or you can be smart and back out of the area and leave it be until the season starts. In my case, I was in there specifically to hang a stand and put a camera on a trail. When I spooked the buck, I immediately stopped and put my stand in the closest viable tree and hung my camera a little further away from the trail crossing than I would've liked. These events can put you in a less than ideal situation, but you have to be conservative. I won't check this camera until I go in there on opening day to hunt and I sure as heck won't be anywhere near the stand either. If you find yourself in a similar situation this year, please play it safe if you want to kill the big guy you're setting out for!
